It was a typical day, much like any other, when I received that long-awaited phone call inviting me for an interview. My heart raced with enthusiasm, my mind filled with dreams of joining a prestigious, luxurious hotel. Little did I know that what awaited me on that fateful day would be unlike any interview experience I had ever imagined.
As I meticulously prepared myself, I delved into the world of the renowned organization, studying its every facet. I had my qualifications at the ready, rehearsed my answers, and dressed for success. I was ready to conquer the interview, or so I thought.
The moment arrived, and I found myself seated across from the interviewer, a figure whose demeanor and aura exuded an unsettling air of something I couldn’t quite fathom immediately. They began by introducing themselves and providing insights into the role. I, ever the attentive interviewee, absorbed every word, taking notes diligently.
But then came the first red flag. Without delving into my background, my experiences, or how I believed I could contribute to the role, the interviewer abruptly shifted gears. They asked me to suggest solutions to hypothetical issues the hotel might face. It felt like an ambush, akin to asking someone to diagnose plumbing problems by merely looking at a house’s exterior. Confusion enveloped the room.
It soon became clear that this person was not interested in hiring me; they were fishing for ideas. The interview continued with more perplexing questions, and I shared my vision for appropriate activities, including collaboration with a renowned influencer who seemed like an ideal fit. That’s when everything changed.
The mere mention of this influencer seemed to trigger something within the interviewer. They launched into a derogatory tirade, demeaning the influencer in the most unprofessional manner possible. If I mentioned these things you just wouldn’t believe it either. Shock washed over me as I listened to baseless accusations and insults.
In my disbelief, I managed to maintain composure, responding that everyone is entitled to their opinion. This seemed to momentarily surprise the interviewer, who then attempted to justify their behavior by claiming it was a part of the job’s tough nature. They even went on to inquire about my age, telling me I looked older than I actually was. Imagine! Something quite untrue!
It became evident that this person had no intention of conducting a fair interview. They seemed determined to break me, to see if I would succumb to their intimidation. It was, without a doubt, the most draining interview of my life.
I couldn’t help but wonder about the employees who had to endure such toxicity daily. This interview was just a small window into the reality of many bureaucratic environments. Why did this person have to be so dismissive, so disrespectful? What did they stand to gain from this charade? It was a colossal waste of my time, energy, and hope. I don’t think I’ll ever recommend anyone to even visit their premises which is such a shame.
Dear interviewers, as you carry out your crucial role in selecting candidates, remember that the energy you emit has a profound impact. The experiences you provide to candidates, whether positive or negative, leave a lasting impression. Treat each interviewee with respect, empathy, and fairness, for you never know the ripple effect it may have.
In sharing my story, I hope to shed light on the importance of respectful and professional conduct during interviews. Let us learn from the worst experiences and strive to make the journey of job seeking a more humane and empowering one.
